2012 MEC Victoria Paddlefest

When Louise moved up from her Delta Fourteen to the Seventeen a couple of years ago, she did it with some trepidation. Although she didn’t mind the Seventeen, she much preferred the Sixteen; however the Sixteen was not yet in production and she had only paddled in the prototype. The Seventeen has a hard chine and Louise preferred the Sixteen’s rounder hull shape. However, there was no timeframe as to when the Sixteen would be available and in spite of her slight misgivings, she went with the Seventeen.
In hindsight, she should have waited. She’s never been entirely comfortable in that boat and therefore not entirely comfortable on the water. And after trying all sorts of tricks like padding out the boat, using weights to change the boat's balance, and self-hypnosis (okay, I made that one up), she’s decided it’s time for a different approach: buy a boat she likes better.
That task begins in earnest today, as we headed to the 2012 MEC Paddlefest Victoria to, among other things, test drive some boats.
Of course, much like last year's Paddlefest, the weather wasn't the best. We've been calling it June-uary, the coldest and wettest June in half a century in these parts. Why should the last day of the month be an exception? Heavy drizzle greeted the start of the day this morning, but even though the rain had stopped by the time Louise and I arrived at Willows Beach, we were greeted by something unexpected: fog.

The weather was cloudy and and wet at last year's Paddlefest, but one could argue the fog this year made it even worse. But fog does burn off, sometimes anyway. Would it burn off today?
We soon bumped into Mark and Robyn (of the great Gecko Paddler blog) and together we quickly checked out what was what on the beach before Louise and I changed into our paddling togs.

The first boat Louise tried was a Stellar S16. Brian Henry from Ocean River Sports discussed the boat with her.

These are insanely light boats, but seemed very sturdy and well made. Carrying it to the water it felt as light as a feather. A large 16 kilo feather made of kevlar and fibreglass. You know what I mean. Louise liked the boat, but it didn't make her want to take it home.

Next up, Louise tried a composite Necky Eliza.

Louise has had some experience in an Eliza, having paddled Paula's plastic one a few times, and using a plastic one on our recent paddle on Salt Spring Island. However, the composite model is narrower and slightly shorter and has a sharper rocker than the plastic version, and some paddlers have argued that the differences in the ride between the two are enough that the two models should have two different names. Louise feels the same way and actually likes the ride of the plastic version more.

Then Louise got her chance to paddle the Delta Sixteen.

Clearly, there is no question that she loves this boat. Look at that grin. She was out there edging and leaning, things she was reluctant to try in the other boats she tried today. It's pretty obvious to us that this is the boat she should have bought, and it's the boat she should buy now.

While we discussed her options, Ocean River's Discovery Island Tour boat arrived on shore.

Yes, it's so cool that even stand-up paddle-boarders bow in tribute to it.
Actually, it's pretty cool set-up, and certainly a quick way to get kayaks out to a destination.

By this time, Paula had joined us on the beach and she and Louise each took out a Sterling kayak.

These are beautiful and well-made boats. Both Louise and Paula had minor quibbles with the hip pads in the seats, but since these kayaks are all custom made for the buyer, those issues could be easily worked out upon purchase. We all thought these were great boats.

As we were leaving, we bumped into Mark and Robyn again, and found Mark trying out a P&H Delphin.

"I'm looking for a rock boat," he said. Why do I have a feeling they're going to be looking for garage space soon as well?

Fisheries and Oceans Website

All paddlers need to know how to learn about where we are taking our small boats. Where can you get an affordable chart, or a free one, of the waters where you'll be sea kayaking? What about getting an idea about the Great Lakes shoreline where you're considering paddling next year? What are the tides like in Porlier Pass? Plenty of questions come to mind.


For Canadian small boat users, we've got the website for Fisheries and Oceans. Here's a photo from their homepage -- your tax dollars at work! They have a page for Nautical Charts and Services from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. Look here for links to paper and digital charts and their prices, info on Tides, Currents, and Water Levels, and interactive maps.

Other countries have their government resources online, and a good search engine can take you to their websites, but this is a Canadian one. And while we're thinking about the Fisheries and Oceans website, this is a good time to contact your local Member of Parliament, to ask how the federal government's new legislation will affect the department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Stolen Kayaks in Winnipeg area

Annoying news to share from two kayakers in Winnipeg. Darwin and Ben strapped two Current Designs Caribou sea kayaks onto their car roof Wednesday night. Thursday morning they got up at 6:00 am to drive from Winnipeg MB to Whitehorse YK to take part in the Yukon River Quest. But lo and behold, their kayaks had been stolen.
Now, that's mean. These kayaks were not borrowed while sitting on a beach somewhere tied to a tree with a sign on it saying "please don't f*ck with my boat" like four boats are on a beach I know here in Victoria. These kayaks were stolen.
As a blogger commented at WildernessSupply.ca "Two 17-foot sea kayaks are not easy things to hide, and the Winnipeg paddle community is a small one. Wilderness Supply has offered Darwin and Ben replacement kayaks to borrow for the duration of the race, but we are hopeful those responsible for the theft can be caught and their original boats recovered. Please watch for anyone attempting to sell a yellow or white Current Designs Caribou sea kayak. A reward is being offered, and any leads or information can be directed to the Winnipeg police non-emergency number, 204-986-6222."

3 Kayakers Rescued Off Vancouver Island

While kayakers in the Great Lakes are dealing with a paddling tragedy there, three kayakers had to be rescued from Estevan Point on the west coast of Vancouver Island yesterday evening by a Canadian Forces rescue helicopter. One kayaker rolled his kayak and as the other two paddlers assisted him, one of their kayaks was severely damaged on the rocks. All three were able to get to get ashore uninjured, but they were stranded. A passing boater noticed their plight and alerted authorities.
"They had all of the proper kayaking and safety gear with them," said Sergeant Steph Clavette, SAR Tech, "it was just bad luck that they rolled and then smashed a boat while helping their friend."
The three were hoisted from the cliff, and returned to their campsite.

Two Days at Pacific Rim Park, or How I Took 20 Pictures of A Whale Only To Discover That It Was Actually Seaweed

Last week, Louise and I travelled to Pacific Rim National Park on the West Coast of Vancouver Island for a couple of days of rest and recreation. We booked a room at a resort in Ucluelet, and on a wet and misty morning left home for the five hour drive up the island.
Our first stop was Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park just outside Port Alberni. The only area of old-growth Douglas Fir in BC that's easily accessible by highway, it draws people from around the world.

It's simply a stunning place, with a palpable sense of awe as we walked among ancient giants.

I wonder how many people have taken this shot over the years.

As rain began to fall, we continued on to Port Alberni.The small city is about 60 kilometres from the ocean as the crow flies, a 90 minute drive through winding mountain roads, but on March 28, 1964 the ocean travelled to Port Alberni. Four hours after a huge earthquake in Alaska, a tsunami washed up the long narrow Alberni Inlet, six waves in all. Nearly four hundred homes were damaged, 55 were washed away entirely. Amazingly, no one was killed.
The area was hit by the tsunami from last year's Japan earthquake, but no damage was reported.

After a brief pit stop, we carried on along the winding and twisting highway towards the west coast. Where the road crosses Wally Creek, you can stop at a small gorge where the cold snow melt water rushes towards nearby Kennedy Lake. Here you can climb over the rocks and take a few pictures.

Everyone should have a place where they can go where the rest of the world doesn't just disappear, but becomes irrelevant. Where simply the act of being there calms you. Where you find yourself again. This is my place.

Back in the 1970s, you could camp on the beach. Actually, you could drive your car along the beach. You'd pay your fee, drive up and down the beach until you found a patch of sand you liked, park your vehicle, and pitch your tent. My dad and I camped on the beach this way a number of times. The best part was driving along the beach and seeing a car that had been left a little too close to the waterline when the tide rolled in. Every so often you'd see a car sunk to the doorhandles in the wet sand. Or almost to the roof. I bet some of them are still there buried in the beach. (I wonder if Jimmy Hoffa ever came to Long Beach. But I digress.)

A short drive south of the Park is where we found our destination for the evening, the town of Ucluelet. And yes, there's an App for that.

At the south end of the town the Wild Pacific Trail winds its way around the rugged and rocky shore. We walked the Amphirite Point Lighthouse loop, where you're quite likely to spot an eagle, a real one this time.

Late in the day, it was time to check-in to our room at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort.

Because the resort had mixed up our reservation dates, they upgraded us to a suite, with a kitchenette, a large bedroom with a king-sized bed, and a huge bathroom.
Louise marvelled at the fancy bathroom, featuring modern fixtures including both a large tub and a separate glass-enclosed shower. She made note of all the freebies, noting all the complimentary soaps packets, and pointing out to me four apparently similar packages and saying, "And here's all the shampoos."
She excused herself and I began to prepare for my shower. One odd thing about the room was that there was a pair of opaque glass doors set into the wall over the bathtub forming a small window which when opened looked into the bedroom. We eventually realized that with this window open as well the curtains in the bedroom, a person in the bath would have a picturesque view towards the ocean.
So anyway, I grabbed a complimentary shampoo and took a shower. Afterwards, Louise took her turn in the bathroom, opting for a bath. But no sooner had she finished, then she joined me on the couch and asked me how I liked the shampoo, while trying not to laugh.
"It was okay, I guess," I replied. "It was very thick."
She was unable to hold it in any longer and burst into howls of laughter. "You didn't use the shampoo! You washed your hair with the body lotion!"
"You didn't say there was body lotion. You said they were all shampoos!"
"I didn't say all the packets were shampoos! Didn't it feel too thick to be shampoo when you put it in your hair?"
"Well, yeah, it was thick. But it seems to have done wonders for my dry scalp."
She sighed the sigh of a person who spends a great deal of time wondering if she's shacked up with the village idiot. I know this because I have heard this sound many times when she seems to be exasperated with me. Whenever I point out that discovering this connection between her sighs and her seemingly continuing state of chagrin with me demonstrates clear evidence that I am in fact not an idiot, she sighs again.

The next morning, we drove north of Long Beach to Tofino. And yes, there's an App for that, too.

West coast communities are an interesting combination of tree-huggers and tree-killers. As we munched on our breakfast seated at Breakers' window, across Tofino's main street was a house where the owner certainly seemed to be not as welcoming of the constant flow of tourists through the town.

Our original plan was to do some kayaking out of Ucluelet, but Ocean Outfitters had a deal on their six-hour Hot Springs tour, so we decided to sign up for that instead.

We boarded the small craft that seated 15 and departed from Tofino harbour. Louise, despite all her kayaking experience, does not like being in small boats. She turned to me as the boat pulled from the dock and said, "I didn't realize the boat would be this small."

We bounced around through some open water for a while, but soon we were behind the protection of Vargas and Flores Islands and deep into Clayquot Sound. We checked out an eagle's nest....

...and then he checked us out.

I counted seven eagles on the trip out. And one sea otter.

These otters are different from the otters we see in Victoria, which are actually river otters and divide their time between water and land. This is a true sea otter that spends all its time in the sea and never goes on the land.

After a 90 minute ride through stunning scenery brought us to Maquinna Marine Provincial Park. As our small silver boat pulled out from the dock to make a run back to Tofino...

...until Louise stopped and asked what the strange smell was. I apologized and said that my shower last night was not nearly as effective as I had hoped. She sighed again and said, "Not that. We must be near the hot spring. I smell sulpher."

The water rises up from a depth of about 5 kilometres, achieving a flow rate at the exit on the surface of about 5 to 8 litres a second at a temperature of around 50 degrees C. The water flows down a short stream, over a small waterfall....

...and into some small pools. And the pools are small and crowded, so Louise only put her toes in, while I relaxed and took pictures of the view.

Louise and I found a couple of rocks to sit on and enjoy our boxed lunches we had bought earlier at Breakers, and we were joined by a Steller's Jay who was clearly hoping for a handout.

Of course, feeding wildlife in provincial parks is prohibited so this little feathered fella received nothing from us, but I have the feeling that he is well fed regardless of the regulations.
After a couple of hours we hiked back to the dock for our ride back to Tofino. This time we took the outside route back in the hopes of spotting some whales. Unfortunately for some of us, the water was extremely rough as we bounced through the waves. You've heard of white-knuckle fliers? It turns out Louise is a white-knuckle boater. No sooner had we reached the open water than she had dug the fingers of one hand deep into my right thigh.
I told her to look at the horizon. Of course, by this time we were dropping into troughs so deep that when she looked out the window, the tops of the waves were up even with the top of the boat. Her fingers dug deeper into my thigh and I lost all feeling below my knee.

Eventually we closed in on three gray whales. We saw them blow a couple of times, but they were hard to keep track of in the heaving seas. Then one of our follow passengers pointed out a shadow in the water near the boat. "There it is!" All of us with cameras scampered out onto the back deck, shutters clicking.

We merrily clicked away until someone finally realized that it wasn't a whale, but a big clump of seaweed. Even our guide was briefly fooled. The real whales made one last blow in the distance, and then our guide said that it was time to move on. Our choices were to travel further out into rougher water and see the sea lions, or stick close to shore and calmer water. Someone shouted, "Sea lions!" and the guide grinned devilishly and slammed the boat into gear, much to the horror of some on the boat who clearly had had enough of bouncing on the waves. Louise turned an even whiter shade of pale, something that I didn't believe was possible, and as her fingers dug even deeper into my leg, I tried to think back to my first aid course and how long blood circulation had to be cut off before permanent tissue damage occurs. We found the sea lions lounging on a small islet.

We probably could have found them with our eyes closed by following the smell of used fish.
Leaving the sea lions behind, we were soon in the calm waters of Tofino's harbour. Louise quickly recovered from her terror on the sea, and the doctor says my new limp won't be permanent.

Now that we were outside the park, we tried feeding this one. As it turned out, he was not a fan of coleslaw.

Our time up-island drew to a close, and the next morning we began our drive back home. But you can't drive down the island without stopping in Coombs to see the goats on the roof.

We put the kibosh on our kayaking plans before we even got out of bed this morning as a wind storm blew in over night. And then the rain started.
The kayaking bug has not hit us hard this year at all so far. We've only been out a few times. One reason is certainly the weather -- this is the coolest June in these parts in half a century. There's another reason as well, one we'll talk further about here in a couple of weeks. Foreshadowing -- the sign of a quality blog.
But we did have some paddling related plans, and Louise and I made our way down town to Celebrate Victoria's Harbour.

Have to say there wasn't much going on while we were there, but the weather wasn't cooperating and we couldn't stay very long. We did go for a ride on a Harbour Ferry between the two venue sites...

Sure It's Big, But Is It Rudder or Skeg?

What floats, is over 400 feet long, and seats 100? The world's longest kayak. Put together with over 100 modular parts from Point 65N kayaks, it was paddled to celebrate L.L.Beans 100th anniversary. Surprisingly, it's quite manoeuvrable and spins on a dime...as long as the dime is the size of a football field. Check out the video below:

Pssst! Wanna Buy an Island?

For Sale: 780 acres of land featuring an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, a 5,000 square foot owner’s residence, six guest cottages, and a Western-styled ghost town. All on your very own private island. Mind you, you'll need a whole lotta dollars to buy this island. 75,000,000 of them.
James Island, a Gulf Island halfway between Victoria and Sidney, is being put up for sale by its reclusive American owner, Craig McCaw.
For most of the 20th century, the island was home to an explosives manufacturing plant. 10% of the bombs used by Commonwealth countries in WWI were produced here. But the plant was closed in 1972, and the village disassembled in 1979, and McCaw bought the island almost 20 years ago.
We've kayaked here a few times over the years, and we've heard the occasional story concerning private security guards on the island not taking kindly to kayakers who've paused on the sandy yet private beaches. (In fairness, I must point out that we have never suffered such an occurrence.)
So what do you say? Every kayaker on the planet puts in a couple of bucks and we'll buy the place. And everyone can camp for free. Deal?

Tragedy at the Skook

The tidal race at Skookumchuck Narrows is known to sea kayakers for generating a world-class standing wave for surfing. But over the weekend the wave reminded us of its power as two local Search and Rescue volunteers were killed during a training session in the narrows when their rigid-hulled inflatable boat flipped in the wave. Two of the SAR volunteers managed to get out of the water, but two were pinned under their boat.
Local SAR agencies train in the waters regularly, and the accident investigation continues.

Home Fuel Spill Reminder

About a year ago there was a fuel spill from a home heating tank locally. Heck, there were about a dozen such spills over the last year, reported in the Greater Victoria area and on the Island! But this one made a big impression as the fuel leaked into the little Colquitz River, a salmon spawning stream that runs through several neighbourhoods and into Portage Inlet.
We wrote about that spill at that time. But much of what we said then bears repeating: these fuel spills are avoidable, and they damage our neighbourhoods and our home waters where we paddle most often.
I'm putting out a call to readers of Kayak Yak. If your home is heated with fuel of any kind, go check that the fuel tank and pipes aren't leaking. I mean it. Go to the tank in your yard or the gas pipe that enters your apartment building. And while you're at it, check if the driveway near your home has any oily stains spreading into a storm drain. I'm just sayin'.
It would be great if readers could write a comment in reply to this post, telling that you checked that your heating fuel is not leaking onto the ground or into the water. We know that we can't stop all the fuel spills in the world, but we can each look after our own yards.
We have mentioned salmon spawning in Colquitz Creek, but there's also many other fish and living things in that creek and Swan Creek year-round. When kayaking there, we've seen raccoons and many kinds of birds. The Saanich News wrote an article about these animals and also included information of interest to homeowners with fuel tanks. Turns out that they've got advice on fuel tank maintenance and a pdf to download from the municipality. Knowledge is power. We can learn things to help us keep our neighbourhoods cleaner!

GINPR news!

Hello to all of you.
As part of the federal budget 2012 cuts, Parks Canada is eliminating the
Park and Community Planning Coordinator position for Coastal BC (my
position).  I want to provide you with an update on the management
plan/planning process before I move on to other endeavours in the next
short while.  I ask that you please not respond to this email.
To-date, Phase 2 of the park management planning process has included four
stakeholder sessions (held in January & February), a Coast Salish session
(in March), and public open houses held on Saturna, Pender and Mayne
Islands (in May).   We are holding the last open house in downtown
Vancouver this Thursday (Noon-3pm at the Morris J Wosk Centre for
Dialogue).  Although we had originally planned to have information booths
at three locations in June and July, we will now only be at the Town of
Sidney Market on June 21 (Beacon Ave. between First and Second Streets).
I ask for your assistance to spread the word that Management Plan
Newsletter #5, which contains all that is currently being proposed in Phase
2 and was sent to you in late April, is available on the park website (
www.parkscanada.gc.ca/gulf - use the Management Planning feature button on
the right hand side of the home page).  I've also attached a copy of it
again for convenience.  At this time, the planned on-line comment form is
not operational. Again, given the cuts I cannot say if it will be made
operational or not, hence I have also attached a copy of it for your use
and for others.
It is clear to me that Parks Canada will need to significantly reduce the
number of proposed objectives and actions and/or extend the timeline for
implementing the management plan.  In addition to the questions in the
comment form, it will be important for interested individuals and groups to
identify which of the current proposed actions people feel are most
critical.  This information may help inform discussions that the Park
Superintendent and the Management Team will have as they determine
realistic priorities for the future.
Comments on the Phase 2 information are being received until July 20.

Linkapalooza

In April , an Aussie kayaker was attacked by a shark, but the shark was more interested in the kayak than the kayaker. Michael Demasi's kayak was bitten by a six-metre great white, but Demasi, thinking only that he'd run up onto some rocks, bailed out in the water. "I didn't know it was a shark so I was relaxed enough to grab my sunnies as I bailed out," he said. "It wasn't until I came up from the water when I saw a big thing gnawing the kayak. It had brought its head out of the water to grab the kayak."
Luckily, the shark only had eyes, and teeth, for his kayak, and another kayaker was able to pull him away.
