There's an interesting little list of nautical words to be found at brianberlin.net where he not only lists nautical turns of phrase that have entered everyday vocabulary, but defines them in colourful terms. Charming! Boat users will find there's food for thought here, and even a definition of "Crossing The Line" which agrees with my father's memory of his Navy experience on crossing the Equator.
