Nanook of the North

89 years ago today, Nanook of the North, a film that is generally regarded as the first full-length documentary, was released. Here's the famous kayaking sequence:

  1. That is the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my life! Thanks for posting that. Is that for real? I thought his boat was a little tippy, but now I know why!

  2. It's hard to know if it's for real or not. It seems certain that some scenes in the film were staged, which was certainly the norm for films of the era. Was this scene staged? Hard to know for sure. My hunch would be yes, but I'm not sure that anyone knows for certain.
